On this day fathers are honored. But the truth is it is an honor to be a father. An honor to be given a precious life to care for, understand, nurture, challenge, nudge, push, and love no matter what. No backup plan. My life does not change on this day, not one bit. I do not need a day to feel special for even in the grumpy moments the responsibility does not escape me. And I always feel the deepest gratitude. Rather, on this day, I send a silent prayer for strength, peace, and devotion for those in the “brotherhood.” You matter. And I send a prayer for those who want to be fathers but for some reason, it is not yet in the cards. Or for those who never got passed that step of not wanting to fail, repeat history, or hadn’t made sense of being fathered. Or for those who had a backup plan and left. I pray that someday you make sense of this complicated path and find your way back home.

Many times I have written, spoken, or offered silently to the heavens that being a father is the only thing I have ever been certain of in this life. I cannot begin to answer, “why?” It just is and something has to show you that somehow it really is all connected.
